Description
This seasonal acrylic painting was inspired by two elements:
The old Children's Halloween Song;
"Stirring Our Brew and Three Little Witches",
(with the illustrative emphasis being on the "Stirring Our Brew" part),
and the Aurora Monster Model of "The Witch".
These are the lyrics (and the motions) to
"Stirring our Brew and Three Little Witches"
Stirring and stirring and stirring our brew... (Pretend to stir.)
Wooooooo! Woooooo! (Cup hands by mouth.)
Stirring and stirring and stirring our brew... (Stir.)
Wooooooo! Wooooo! (Cup hands by mouth.)
Tip-toe. Tip-toe. BOO! (Pretend to tip-toe.)
One little, two little, three little witches. (Hold up 3 fingers.)
Flying over haystacks, flying over ditches. (Fly fingers in the air.)
Slid down the moon and tore their britches! (Smile and cover your eyes.)
Hi, ho, Halloween’s here! (Clap hands.)
Aurora Monster Models – turning every boy’s dream into a nightmare!
In 1962, it became evident to the businessmen of the Aurora Model Kit Company,
that the "Frankenstein" (the Monster) kit was going to be a huge success.
The rest of the line-up was rushed into production.
"Dracula" came next, followed by the "Wolfman",
both of these being in stores in time for Christmas 1962.
The following year saw the "Creature", the "Mummy"
and the "Phantom of the Opera", with the "Hunchback of Notre Dame",
"King Kong", and "Godzilla" coming in 1964.
"Dr Jekyll as Mr Hyde" was not released until 1965.
Later that year, the "Bride of Frankenstein" and the "Witch" went into production,
but it was a miscalculation by Aurora; girls tended not to buy model kits,
and female characters seemingly did not appeal to most 10 year old boys.
This painting was first unveiled at the Carter Sexton Gallery on Laurel Canyon,
in Studio City, California, on Saturday, October 13, 2018.
It was one of three entries by
Jonathan Morrill that was accepted into their annual Halloween exhibition.
The original painting was sold to a private collector
in Rockingham County, New Hampshire.
