Description
This is a painting depicting the full arrangement of a long-since-banned
Red Rose Tea Commercial featuring the Marquis Chimps.
Jonathan Morrill has brought back this infamous combo,
performing at the Savoy Ritz, and brought to you for the first time
in living color.
This painting pays tribute to the artist's first memory of television.
Here is a backstory about the commercial:
In 1960, the Marquis Chimps were signed by Brooke Bond Foods
to do three commercials for Red Rose Tea.
Two of them featured the Marquis Chimps as golfers and cowboys respectively, but the one that everyone fondly remembers
is the one featuring the simian performers as a swinging jazz band.
The commercial starts with an establishing shot outside the
Savoy Ritz night club.
Inside, the band is blowing hot while a couple of chimp jitterbuggers
cut a rug on the dance floor.
After an intro on trumpet, piano, bass and drums,
the lead vocalist steps up to the mike.
Furiously rubbing his head with one paw,
he does a little scat, then launches into the song with the following lyrics:
"Red Rose Tea/Red Rose Tea/Red Rose/Red Rose!"
Wrapping up, the band lets out with a scream and the drummer shouts:
"Red Rose!"
The original painting is now part of a private estate collection in South Carolina.
