Description
This painting was composed and created
in honor of the 60th anniversary release of
Universal International Picture's "Tarantula" (1955).
"Tarantula" was released in the United States on December 14, 1955.
John Agar, may he rest in piece, was a kind southern gentleman,
and personal friend of this artist.
Here, Mr. Agar heads the cast as Dr. Matt Hastings, who,
along with Mara Corday as Stephanie 'Steve' Clayton,
Nestor Pavia as Sheriff Jack Andrews,
and Leo G. Carroll as Professor Gerald Deemer,
pass through several unpleasant scientific blunders
that rapidly unfold in the Arizona desert.
One of the truly bizarre sub-plots of any fantasy film
happens right here in this one.
Due to some seemingly passive-aggressive behavior involving
a rapid-growth "nutrient"
that Professor Deemer has been monkeying around with,
several of his human colleagues have developed an accelerated condition
of acromegaly.
They are all wandering about the desert in their pajamas, delirious,
and grotesquely deformed in the head and hands.
The make-up design for these victims of acromegaly
is credited to Bud Westmore.
Legendary Universal stuntman Eddie Parker portrayed two of them:
Paul Lund and Eric Jacobs.
Both of these characters flank the center Leo G. Carroll character.
They are depicted in this piece,
but Eddie Parker uncredited in the movie.
"Tarantula" was first exhibited at The Carter-Sexton Gallery
on Laurel Canyon in North Hollywood, for their Halloween Show,
'Scary, Scary Night', Saturday, October 24, 2015.
This piece measures 16" x 20", and was painted with acrylics on canvas.
"Tarantula" is featured in "Giant Monsters of Filmland",
an encyclopedic volume of all of the giant monsters that have rampaged
across the silver screen since movies began,
Jonathan Morrill's artwork has received got a whole page (page 353),
which features five his original giant monster paintings!
Published and conceived for the press by the brilliant Eric McNaughton.
