This acrylic painting pays tribute to several classic science-fiction and monster movies
from the 1930's through the early 1960's.
These films include "The Fly (1958), "The Bride of Frankenstein" (1935),
"The Creature from the Black Lagoon" (1954), "The Brain fom Planet Arous" (1957), "Return of the Vampire" (1943),"Plan 9 From Outer Space" (1959),
"The Man Who Knew Too Much "(1934), "The Brain That Wouldn't Die"(1962),
and the classic monsters masks of the "Shock Monster" and the "Ghoul",
made by Topstone Industries, and designed by Keith Ward.
This painting depicts all of the aforementioned Groovy Ghoulies meeting at a Tiki Bar, very much like the Tonga Hut, for a horrific Happy Hour.
This painting was unveiled at the Tonga Hut, in North Hollywood, California,
for the annual "Monsters & Mai Tais" Art Show (VII),
which happened on Sunday, October 28th, 2018
Jonathan Morrill is a Hollywood-based artist. His acrylic works of many a tinsel-town icon have graced the walls of La-La Land's great haunts, including Hollywood Forever Cemetery, where he appears as himself in the HBO documentary; "The Young and The Dead" (2000), painting an over-sized portrait of Rudolph Valentino as the "The Son of The Sheik", mere yards away from the icons final resting place. The piece is featured in Tracy Ryan Terhune's book 'Valentino Forever' (AuthorHouse, 2004) In 2019, that same 10' x 10' acrylic portrait continues to be displayed at the annual Valentino memorial.
